Let's battle numbers!

Let's battle!  We walked the room battling one another with our greater than and less than sticks!  They love "battling!"

Pokemon Math

Pokemon returns to teach us some math!

We learned how to play Pokemon math today!  It is very similar to war except we use our greater than and less than signs and if there is an equal we take those cards out of play.  The person with the most cards at the end of time wins!  They love it!

Mrs. Letts: science extraordinaire

We are super lucky to be able to welcome Mrs. Letts, a retired high school chemistry teacher and later the science supervisor for Columbus Schools, into our first grade classroom.  She is a wonder with kids and knows how to get them excited about learning and about science.  SHe encouraged all our kids to take as many science classes as they could as they grow up!  I loved her enthusiasm for teaching and for working with kids and am hoping we can have her back in very soon!

Water Science Part 3

At this station we worked with a partner to try and disperse the water from the jar with pennys.  We filled the water to the top and counted how many pennys it took to make it overflow.

We stopped to talk about how if there was a wet spot on their napkin then that meant it had overflowed already because the first graders were looking for a waterfall to happen.  Kids are so cute!

Water Science Part 1

How much water can a penny hold?  That is what we found out today when we used our droppers.

She also shared about the difference between a slow drop and a fast plop...it can hold more at a slow drop!

Many students got around 20 drops but the coolest thing we found out was that the heads side could actually hold a couple more drops than the tails... It depends on the surface area!

Water Science part 2

Here we were observing the differences between the combination of cinnamon and water and pepper and water.  When we added cinnamon it dispersed all over the surface and stayed at the top, but when we added the pepper it sort of clumped together and some began falling toward the bottom.  Mrs. Lett's told us that it was because pepper is made of at least two different things! When we added the detergent the cinnamon repelled it where as the pepper was drawn to it!  Super cool to see how the different substances were affected differently!

Kelly DiPucchio, famous author, is coming!

A quick preview of one of the books for our K-1 author visitor who will be here in May!  So exciting!  A form to order books from her will be coming home.  If you bring or buy a book by her she will personally sign it!  Super cool!

Quiet time teamwork

I love to watch them all start working together.  They come up with the best ideas!

Medical Training!

Dr. Joyner stopped by again and brought some tools for us to practice our future doctoring skills with!  The kids got to learn how to make a stitch, use a staple, check eyes, look at x-rays, check hearing and listen to their lungs, hearts and stomachs!  What a super cool experience for them all!

Eye check...

We saved the banana!
X-Ray check!
Learning how to use staples in surgery!
Dr. Joyner said we have to be strong but gentle so we don't squish the banana!

Tempest Poem Work

Working on the William Shakespeare poem we will do at the beginning of our show!  The kids almost know it by heart already!  Memorizing poetry is a great way to strengthen our minds and help with memory.  I am so proud of them!
