LEGO math

LEGO math and 10s Frames

Who doesn't love LEGOs?  I honestly have never met anyone that doesn't!  So why not incorporate it with our math!  We are learning to work with a 10s frame.  When students can order numbers on their 10s frame then they can begin to easily start seeing numbers.  For instance instead of counting the top row of empty boxes, we automatically know that is 5.  And if all the boxes are filled in that is 10!  Now with that basic beginning we can start thinking about faster ways to find numbers for instance if the whole top row is finished and there is 1 extra in the 2nd row, that equals 6 because 6 is one more than 5.  In the same sense we start thinking in 1 less and 2 more/less.

After we got our number, we picked out that number of LEGOs (speedy fast) and laid them in the right order on our 10s frame.  Once I noticed everyone had the right number and put it in the right order, I gave 40-90 seconds for them to "master build" with the pieces they had on their 10s frames.  We are really creative!
